Snacks | Healthy Houmous

I love making my own food from scratch. Unfortunately, we  never know what extra ingredients are added to shop manufactured products unless we check the ingredients fully, and even when we do, there are many names which disguise sweeteners. I personally stay away from these 'low fat' options.

To make a healthy homemade houmous, you will need:

200g sesame seeds
4 tsp extra virgin olive oil

1 can of chickpeas
Half a lemon
4 cloves of garlic

First, we make a fresh Tahini.

Toast 200g sesame seeds over a low heat, constantly stirring with a wooden spoon until slightly browned. This increases flavour and makes the Tahini even more yummy!

Next, blend the sesame seeds with 4 tsp extra virgin olive oil to form the tahini paste.

Now, to make the houmous, wash the tinned chickpeas in a sieve thoroughly. Add the chickpeas to the existing tahini in the blender. Cut a lemon in half and squeeze half a lemon juice into the mix.

Peel and chop 4 cloves of garlic and add to the blender.

Next, turn on the blender. If the paste is too thick and the blender struggles, add a couple of tsps of water, that should do the trick!

The result is the below, a nice thick fresh houmous, perfect for dipping celery or carrot batons into as a snack, or adding to Buddha bowls bursting with veggies for lunch.
